TEEN TOBACCO USE PREVENTION AND CESSATION INITIATIVE - Outcomes Evaluation

The UNC Tobacco Prevention and Evaluation Programs (UNC-TPEP) evaluates all components of the TTUPC initiative. UNC-TPEP’s Outcomes Evaluation 2004-05 Report concludes that while youth-related tobacco use challenges remain, HWTF’s program has made substantial progress on all four of its goals to:

• Prevent youth initiation of tobacco use - Fewer NC middle school and high school students tried tobacco in 2005 than ever before
• Eliminate youth exposure to secondhand smoke - Nearly two-thirds (75) of NC school districts are now 100% Tobacco-Free; 73 new or improved smoke-free policies in areas frequented by youth have been adopted
• Promote youth access to tobacco cessation services - North Carolina's own tobacco use Quitline, a free service for youth, launched on 11/17/05
• Reduce health disparities among youth attributable to tobacco use - Priority population grantees held more than 60 skill-building trainings this year alone
